What is this experience?

Wearing Identities

Part of the CHECKMATE series by Ashley the Creator (circa 2025)

This art installation is a sculptural experience rooted in a body of work exploring identity, power, and the strategic nature of how we move through the world.

Drawn from the classical game of chess, Wearing Identities takes its pieces off the board and places them on the body. Each of the 32 sculptural headdresses represents a chess piece, transforming participants into living, breathing characters within the game — and within a larger conversation about identity.

The work is designed to be fully participatory: guests are assigned a piece, don their headdress, and enter the game as both player and artwork. Two sides move against each other in real time — pieces are captured, identities shift, and the board is the room itself. When there is no conductor directing the game, a cube determines which piece moves next, introducing an element of chance into every activation.

Every move is intentional. Every capture is a statement. Every participant leaves having embodied something.
