A.O.C.A
The stars have aligned itself in a way, this year, that has things, including myself, moving differently.
For starters, I have been accepted into the Artist of Color Acceleration Program. I am a Fellow of Cohort 3!
I’ve applied to a handful of residencies, and a small amount of Grants/Awards. And this is the first of many that I have been accepted to. I’m very grateful that they resonated with what I wrote; Something along the lines of “I don’t know art business. You know art business. Please teach and guide me.” I’ve learned quite a bit so far. Definitely need to refine my business and branding a lot. (Which is another reason why I wanted to take that time off—per my previous post. There’s just so much that actually goes into making a business flourish and grow…And that really does that the CONSISTENCY of a TEAM. Two things that I need work building.
Along and aside from that, I currently have a rotating show up at my partner organization for the Fellowship; The 224 EcoSpace. As soon as you walk through the front doors that is the first sight you see. Installed the show mid March, and I want to have it up at least until the end of April.
This exhibition doesn’t have a name yet, but it is a combined collection of my old “Lava Lamp Mirror series” and my more recent “Pomology; Hands Series”. I have majority of the fruits(except for orange, apple and watermelon) painted and hung for display—the Red Grapes Sold!!.
The mirrors were inspired by my inner child’s fascination with Lava Lamps and the flow and functionality of it. It’s completely amazing. The way a lava lamp works is that, when cold, the blubbery substance lays—hardened—at the bottom of the glass bottle. Once the lamp light is turned on the substance starts to warm up and soften, When it becomes hot enough the “lava” begins to float upwards, until it reaches the coolest part of the bottle”the top”, then it comes back down a dandies the whole thing all over again.
The Science of temperature, Balance, Density, and Color…all so captivating. Even at this big age of 29, I will still sit in stillness to appreciate a beautiful lava lamp.
The reason why I paired these 2 series together is because they colors and the juiciness, reminded me of one another, so it flowed perfectly in my mind.
It’s honestly so perfect. Even reading deeper into the “why” of each series, they mesh well together.
Here are a handful of words to sum it up;
Memories. Reflections. Growth. Beauty. Evolution. Inner Substance(Self). Color. Energy. Emotions.
